White to play and mate in 2
Click to show solution
- Rf7
If 1. … bxc6, then 2. Rxa7# (either rook is fine)
If 1. … Rxa4, then 2. Qxa4#
If 1. … Ra5, then 2. Rxa5#
If 1. … Ra6, then 2. Rxa6# (the pawn is pinned)
If black moves the rook on b8, then 2. Qxb7# (the rook is pinned)
OR
- Qe8
If 1. … Rxe8, then 2. Rxe8#
If 1. … Rxa4+, then 2. Qxa4#
Qe8 aslo works:
if Rxe8 then mate with the rook
if Rxa4 mate with the queen
if the pawn moves mate in b8
Unfortunately Qe8 doesn’t work because Rxa4 is check, so you can’t mate with queen.
To BrainEaser : Totally false ! If the black rook takes in a4 (and check the white king), the white queen who was on e8 takes the rook in a4 and mate !!
My apologies, ilyass and you are right. Adding this alternate solution to the post now.
Qc6 a checkmate, why you say, cause I take the pawn on b7 which causes force checkmate.
